Post Animal Live at Rough Trade

Post Animal played a sold out show at Rough Trade in Brooklyn on Wednesday. The Chicago based band kicked off their North American tour in April in support of their new record, When I Think Of You In A Castle.
Post Animal’s live sound is somehow even more immersive than on the record, but maybe that is because the boys bring such great, infectious energy to the stage. Opening with “Gelatin Mode,” they launched into an incredible set, full of material off of the new record. As the gig went on, the crowd grew rowdier and rowdier, with the boys eliciting one of the most excited and fun New York crowds that I’ve been a part of. Post Animal stayed smiling and hydrated (pictured) through their killer set, and blew everyone away again, playing a few more songs, including an insane performance of “Goggles,” in a highly requested encore.

 

When I Think Of You In A Castle is out now on Polyvinyl records. The boys are touring for the rest of June, and play at Lollapalooza in August. Tickets are still available, don’t miss this band!

Suuns Live in Brooklyn

Suuns (Ben Shemie, Joseph Yarmush, Max Henry, Liam O’Neill) absolutely tore it up at Elsewhere in Brooklyn. As the boys round out their North American tour, it is clear that the enthusiasm from fans over the new record has been contagious. The Canadian band’s newest release, Felt, experiments with song structure and emotion in a way that separates it from the rest of their discography. The boys played both new material and old (including crowd favorites Powers of Ten and 2020) in an immersive set with a level of confidence and intensity that captivated the dancing crowd. Suuns has 8 shows left on the east coast before they begin the Asian and European legs of their tour, so if you haven’t seen them yet, get your tickets!

Feels Good to be Home – Public Access TV in Brooklyn

With a sophomore album in the bag and back from their European run, the boys of Public Access T.V. kicked off their American tour in Washington, D.C. bringing the band Honduras along with them. After touring through about 20 cities the boys were back in town. Showing off their new creation PATV wrapped up their headline American tour at home. Pretty Sick and Honduras opened up the show for the New York band that graced Brooklyn with tunes from their 2016 freshman album ‘Never Enough’ as well as their newly released ‘Street Safari’ featuring singles like ‘Metrotech’ and ‘Lost In The Game’. It was a must see show!

Jake Bugg and Nina Nesbitt Live at The Bluebird Theater

Outside the Bluebird Theater, fans of multi-award winning Jake Bugg, waited anxiously for the doors to open.
When inside, they were welcomed by opener Nina Nesbitt, who started the show with her nostalgic piece “The Moments I’m Missing” which will be the first song off of her upcoming album. Nina wowed the crowd with her flawless falsettos and her ever relatable lyrics in “Somebody Special”. This tour certainly is special for Nina; being her first time ever to play in the U.S.

Once Jake walked on stage, guitar in hand, the Nottingham based singer-songwriter said hello to the crowd and began strumming to his tune “Hearts That Strain”. He proved himself to be anything but ordinary with his astounding vocals & not to mention his effortless picking skills. Bugg recently released his fourth studio album, but played at the request of fans to reminisce on his older songs. The audience sat quiet in awe of his talent–even occasional shushing could be heard in the midst of the floor. Bugg undoubtedly demonstrated that he is fully capable of delivering his soulful message through the power of his voice anytime. As far as I’m concerned, Nina and Jake will always be welcome back to Denver.

New Music Radar: Sugarspun

Word of mouth counts for a lot and this is certainly the case with Sugarspun. Despite no releases other than a handful of Soundcloud demos, they have forged an army of fans from coast to coast who have bombarded them with requests for more tracks and who have turned up en-masse to sell out venues they have played. Having developed from a two-piece acoustic outfit to a full-on 5-strong indie juggernaut, they capture the triumphant euphoria of prime Stone Roses and the classic 60’s song-writing chops of The Faces and early 90’s acts like The La’s.

Formed in the unlikely rock n roll hotbed of Carlisle in Cumbria, Sugarspun started out as an acoustic duo, comprising vocalist Jamie and Steven (guitar), though rave reviews emanating from their BBC Introducing plays and feverish fan support at their live shows caused the pair to revise their plans and expand to a much larger vision in all senses. Having recruited the members who now complete their line-up – Michael (rhythm guitar); Luke (bass) and Andy (drums) – from their local music scene, they moved away from acoustic tracks and bedroom demos to their first studio-recorded work: “Spaceman Dreams” and “Hide”.

“Spaceman Dreams” is the antithesis of the trend of gloomy introspection and negativity, with hooks flying around like hand grenades and the chorus racing in at speeds Virgin Trains can only dream of. With a message to never give up on your dreams, however distant they may seem, this is the perfect launchpad for a band who remind you how 90’s indie changed the musical landscape by combining musical talent with optimism, irreverence and fun.

2018 Current Faves Playlist

Hello! It has been quite awhile since we last posted.  I was currently going through a period in my life where I had absolutely no clue what I was doing. Transitioning into adulthood, studying for finals and finding a decent job stressed me out. This is something every one goes through, but me being my stubborn self I felt like I was alone in this. I didn’t have any motivation to go photograph shows and write about music reviews; I felt drained.

It wasn’t until February where I genuinely felt happy. As funny as it seems the cure to my sadness was listening to synthy music, especially early 2010s indie pop. In a way it was like a wakeup call telling me everything is going to be fine. I realized the only way I am going to happy with myself is to take action with my choices. I compiled a little playlist of some new tunes that always put a smile across my face. Enjoy! I hope a few tracks make your head bop.
